As the Boundary Pulls Apart is a short film by Matthew Steele (art & animation) and Ben Geller (score and performance). The collaboration between Steele and Geller started during the COVID-19 quarantine. The digital nature of the project enabled the two to collaborate separately. The two started with the premise of change. Geller wrote and recorded the viola piece after seeing some short visuals by Steele. Steele created more assets and animation to pair with music. This volley back and forth between artists was accompanied with conversation about seismic shifts in our culture, parallels to geologic phenomena, fears, and hopes for our future.

The project was developed for an outdoor art event conceived by Goodyear Arts. On June 6 and 7, 2020, the video was projected onto a wall at Camp North End in Charlotte, North Carolina, as viewers watched the video from their vehicles.
